Our story goes back a little way...

In the year 1928, Mr. George Hanlan, businessman and adventurer, undertook an expedition to drive
his Ford motorcar, affectionately called "The Spirit of Belize" from Belize City to the Twin Towns of
San Ignacio/Santa Elena, deep in the Western Cayo District on the border of Guatemala. This was in
conjunction with the first ever Belize-Cayo Bicycle Expedition. He said "If I have to take my car to bits,
I shall get her to the Cayo overland. If the "Spirit of Belize" cannot get that car to the Cayo nothing
else in the world can". He Left Belize at 2 a.m. on Thursday the 5th April and by 4:30 p.m. on Sunday
the 8th his car was at Santa Elena." He became the "first man to take a Ford Car from Belize to
Cayo."

Mr George Hanlan, adventurer extraordinaire, was our great grandfather. And following in his spirit of adventure and daring, we
continue to lead the way in unlocking and sharing the real "Spirit of Belize", now to its visitors. Just as he did back then, we
believe in "the road less travelled", and we can show you the way.

Today, the Old River Adventure Company is a family-owned, licensed Tour Operation,
based in our home town of Burrell Boom, located in Belize's famous River Valley. The
Belize River Valley area has one of the most bio-diverse and ecologically rich
environments in the country, and it is inhabited by hundreds of species of birds and
wildlife. Beyond the flora and the fauna is also a colourful history full of Baymen and
sea battles, characters and civilizations, all of which have influenced the Country of
Belize. You can see much of it right here in the Valley, from ancient Mayan Temples,
to still functional logging plantations.
