Belize (formerly known as British Honduras) is the only country in Central America where English is the official language, although Spanish, Creole, Garifuna and Mayan are widely spoken. It comprises a total area of about 8867 sq miles, and is inhabited by approximately 272,945 good natured people. We even drive on the right side of the road (on occasion)! |
Some rarely known facts: * Belize is the only country whose flag has people on it. * Belize had a constitution (Burnaby's Code) before the United States. * Belize allowed women and freed slaves to vote. |
* The first recorded European settlement was established in 1638 by shipwrecked British sailors. * Belize become a vital part of the trade network with the Confederate States throughout the Civil War. |
